The Distance Learning program offers students the flexibility to study wherever they are qn whenever they want. This mode of delivery is perfect for a student who cannot take time out of their busy schedule to attend class full time.

  • Up to 12 months to complete your course.
  • A user-friendly online Learning Plan that provides structure to your study.
  • Study support from our team of industry-experienced, highly qualified trainers and instructors via email, and phone/ video call by appointment

The only time a Distance Learning student is required to attend campus is to complete their final practical assessment. The final practical assessment is a scheduled assessment run several times per year and must be booked into in advance.

One of the questions we are frequently asked is how practical maritime skills can be assessed through a distance learning program.

At QMTS Training, our Remote Practical Assessment system has been specifically designed to ensure students can demonstrate real workplace skills while remaining in their local area and on vessels they already operate or work aboard.

Rather than travelling to a training centre for every practical activity, students complete a series of structured practical assessments in their workplace. These assessments are recorded using a mobile phone, tablet or camera and uploaded to their online student portfolio for assessor review.

The focus of these assessments is on demonstration rather than theory. Students are required to physically perform tasks, inspect equipment, operate vessel systems, complete workplace documentation and demonstrate safe work practices. Assessors review each submission against detailed performance benchmarks and may conduct additional questioning where clarification is required.

For every remote practical assessment, students are generally required to:

• Review relevant vessel procedures and Safety Management System (SMS) documentation.

• Inspect equipment or vessel systems.

• Demonstrate practical skills and workplace tasks.

• Identify hazards, defects or maintenance requirements.

• Complete workplace documentation.

• Record and upload evidence for assessment.

As an example, students undertaking MAR30924 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master less than 24 m – Near Coastal) may be required to complete a practical assessment involving the operation of an anchor winch.

During this assessment, the student would be required to:

• Review the vessel’s SMS procedures for anchor winch operations.

• Review maintenance records for the equipment.

• Conduct pre-operational inspections of the anchor, chain, windlass and associated equipment.

• Demonstrate the safe deployment and recovery of the anchor.

• Secure the anchor correctly following use.

• Complete maintenance and operational documentation.

• Identify and report any defects found during the inspection.

The assessor is able to observe the student’s practical skills, equipment handling, safety awareness and documentation processes through the recorded evidence. This provides a detailed and authentic picture of the student’s competence in a real operational environment.

This approach offers several advantages:

• Students can complete practical assessments on vessels they are familiar with.

• Training can occur anywhere in Australia.

• Workplace equipment and procedures are incorporated into the assessment process.

• Evidence is recorded and retained for validation and compliance purposes.

• Students receive individual feedback from experienced maritime trainers and assessors.

Remote Practical Assessments form an important part of QMTS Training’s distance learning programs and allow students to develop and demonstrate industry-relevant skills while maintaining flexibility for work and family commitments.

Should you have any questions regarding our Remote Practical Assessment process, please contact our training team who will be happy to explain the requirements for your chosen qualification.
